Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Trace how Timbuktu became the center of education in Mali.
2. Describe the impact Mansa Musa had on the economy of Cairo.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from "This day in History" and be able identify the topic of the passage.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Realia Auction/Close Reading: Mansa Musa's Economic Impact on Egypt: Teacher will lead students in a chunked close reading based on the account by Ibn Battuta. Ibn Battuta describes the state of the economy of Cairo twelve years after Mansa Musa had visited there. Teacher will also lead class in a realia auction that demonstrates the concept of inflation and the impact Mansa Musa had on the economy of Egypt.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Close Paragraph: Education in Mali: Teacher will go over the answers to the close paragraph dealing with the education in Mali and the role Timbuktu played as the center for education.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Annotate/EQ: Mansa Musa Impact on Economy: Students will annotate the chunked passage from Ibn Battuta travels to Cairo and the impact Mansa Musa had on the economy. Tjhey will also answer the essential question.
SDAIE: Realia: Mansa Musa's Social Media: Students will create a social media page for Mansa Musa. They will come up with a hash tag handle that fits Mansa Musa's image. Then they will select and post three images that describes Mansa Musa's social, political, and economic impact in the kingdom of Mali and/or Africa.
Homework.
