7.5.6: Analyze the rise of the military society in the late twentieth century and the role of the samurai in that society.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective/Learning Intent)
Today I am learning about the samurai way of life by:
1. Understaning the code of Bushido.
2. Describing the impact of the samurai way of life.
3. Reviewing the social, political, economy and geography of Japan.

Common Core Literacy Standard:
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
ELD Strategies: CER: Starter: Students will select the appropriate claim taken from the chunked passage from “This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (I Do…) (5 min.)
ELD Strategies: Direct Teach: Tanka Poem: Teacher will provide a quick lecture of a Tanka Poem and what it consist of. Tanka Poems are japanese poems consisting of 5 lines with syllables of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 and they deal with the beauty of nature.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (10 min.)
ELD Strategies: TPS/Focus Notes: Code of Bushido: Teacher will guide students in completing their CER describing Japan's society at the end of the samurai age.
ELD Strategies: CER/Video Clip/Sentence stem: End of the Samurai: Teacher will guide students in completing their CER describing Japan's society at the end of the samurai age.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (25 min.)
ELD Strategies: Video Clips/Graphic Organizer/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Rise of the Samurai: Students read their textbook page 348 and answer their Cornell Notes. Then they will read page 349-350 and fill in the samurai weapon and gear graphic organizer providing facts about the armor and weapons.
ELD Strategies: Graphic Organizer/Focus Notes/TPS/Text to Speech: The Code of Bushido: Students will read pages 355-356 or listen to it on their headphones and complete the Focus Notes dealing with the cod of Bushido. Students will understand what the code his and how it was practiced.
ELD Strategies: Sentence Stems/CER: End of the Samurai: Students are given a passage that explains the end of the samurai and how it can affect the future of any society.
