Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
I am learning about the society of Western Africa by:
Understanding dynamics of the family and formation of villages.
Explaining the importance and value of the griots.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/EQ/Chunked Reading: Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from the History Channel "This Day in History" and answer the essential question by annotating the evidence in the passage. If no evidence is there to answer the passage, students will answer "Not enough information."
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct teach/model: Community and Village Life: Teacher will go over the instructions to the chunked reading and cornell notes students will have to fill out.
SDAIE: Close Read/Direct teach: Griots Proverb QW: Teacher will go over the instruction to the quickwrite students will have to answer using the RACE method. Teacher will model how to set up their paper so that students can take notes. Teacher will lead the students in a close read of the textbook page 250-251.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/lecture/Video Clip: Community and Village Life: Teacher will go over the answers to the different types of vegetation zones that makes up West Africa. Students will make corrections to their assignments. Teacher will play a video clip and students will take down one guided note from the video.
SDAIE: Model/TPS/Talk to the text: Griots Notes: Teacher will go over the notes students should have gathered with their group members
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Talk to the Text: Community and Village Life: Students read a section of the textbook page 217-218. Students will use the guided hints to help them write their notes so they understand how society in West Africa went from communities to villages.
SDAIE: Close Read/Annotate/TPS/QuickWrite/RACE: African Proverb Griots: Students will be given a writting prompt dealing with an African proverb that explains the importance of griots. Students will use the information they gather from reading the close reading from the textbook page 250. Students will work iwth their grouop members to figure who they where, discover thier job, and uncover why they were important. Then they will use that information to complete their RACE QW.

Closure (3 min.)
1. Clean up.

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
