Correlation to State Content Standards
7.6.6: Discuss the causes and course of the religious Crusades and their effects on the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish populations in Europe, with emphasis on the increasing contact by Europeans with cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean world.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the significance of the city of Jerusalem for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
2. Identify the causes of the Crusades and the reasons why each faith sought to defend Jerusalem as their Holy City.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.) Starter: Students will complete their Starter using a chunked section of "This Day in History" were they find the EVIDENCE to the CLAIM given by the teacher in each of the Starter.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clip: Intro to Crusades: Teacher will provide an introduction to what the Crusades were. Teacher will lecture and discuss the concept of point of encounter, religious war, and the importance the Holy Land plays for each of the three major religion of the time. NOV 6, 2022
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Visuals/TPS: Tier II & III Vocabulary/Holy Land: Teacher will go over the answers to the vocabulary and provide clarification and examples of each term. Teacher will also go over the answers to the map activity dealing with Jerusalem. NOV 6, 2022
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Metacognition/TPS: Crusade Vocabulary: Students will define Tier II and III words dealing with the crusades. Students will read the definition and write it in their own words. Students will place a picture or symbol that deals with the picture. NOV 6, 2022
SDAIE: Visual/Group/TPS: Holy Land Map: Students will analyze a map of the Holy Land and answer three questions. They will be asked to identify the main religions that are present in the Holy Land, landmarks, and the importance of those landmarks. Video will go along with the activity to provide visual and audio help. NOV 6, 2022

1. Tracing & analyzing the boundaries of the empires to determine the political cause of the Crusades. the significance of the city of Jerusalem for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
2. Identifying and Understanding why Jerusalem is called the Holy Land by many religions.

SDAIE: TPS: When Worlds Collide Map: Teacher and students will go over the map and uncover the political reasons for the cause of the Crusades. Students will be able to see the conflict that would arise from the proximity of three empires. Teacher will illustrate the Roman Western Empire and the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Orthodox Empire).
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Visual/Group/TPS: When Worlds Collide Map: Students will be asked to shade in the three religions that will be coming into contact via the continent's of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Students will use page 124 in their textbooks to shade in the Muslim Empire.
SDAIE: Visual/map/TPS/Video Clip: Holy Land Map: Students will analyze a map of the Holy Land and answer three questions. They will be asked to identify the main religions that are present in the Holy Land, landmarks, and the importance of those landmarks. Video will go along with the activity to provide visual and audio help. Students can research using the internet the importance of the three landmarks and apply them to their charts.
