Correlation to State Content Standards
Understanding Geography.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
Identify the 7 continents in the world.
Identify at least 1 geographical fact from each continent.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9: Draw evidence from information texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W's: Students will take a quiz based on their starters from last week. This is to help build students skill of studying and taking a test. Students will then vote for their student SSC representative.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: World Geography Scavenger Hunt: Teacher will instruct students on how to complete each of the 8 sections of the assignment. Each section will be chunked into 5 minutes as students search for the answer in their books. This assignment is used as a review for the continents and to ensure students strengthen their map skills.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Close Read: World Geography Scavenger Hunt: Teacher will go over the answers in a close reading method. Teacher will display the answers on the projector.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Video Clip/Latitude & Longitude: World Geography Scavenger Hunt: Students will use their textbook and the internet to complete the assignment. Students will complete cloze sentences dealing with geographical facts they can find using the maps in the book or referencing the internet. Students will spend 4-5 minutes per continent researching the information before going over the answer in class.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: Geography 5 Themes of Geography. Due Friday
Complete the World Geography Scavenger Hunt by Today at 8p.m on Google Classroom.
Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Dismiss Class.
Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
