Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)

1. Identify and Understand the inner workings of Ghana's Empire.
2. Understand the impact Gold trade had on West Africa.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will take their weekly Starter Quiz based on last weeks starters.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Focus Notes/Close Read/Talk to Text/Wait Time: The King and His Government: Teacher will lead students on a close read of Ghana's government and how it used the Gold trade to establish its power in West Africa. Teacher will read a paragraph from the text page 224 allowing students to identify evidence that will answer the two focus questions of their graphic organizer.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Focus Notes: Teacher will go over the answers to the Focus Notes and provide further explanation. Check for understanding make sure students understand supply and demand.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Focus Notes: The King and His Government: Students will identify the evidence that will help the answer the two focus questions in their focus notes. Only evidence and facts will be accepted and placed in their own words for understanding.
Homework.
