Correlation to State Content Standard:
7.5.2: Discuss the reign of Prince Shotoku of Japan and the Characteristics of Japanese society and family life during his reign.
7.5.3: Describe the values, social customs, and traditions prescribed by the lord-vassal system consisting of shogun, daimyo, and samurai and the lasting influence of the warrior code in the twentieth century.
7.5.6: Analyze the rise of the military society in the late twentieth century and the role of the samurai in that society.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDIAE: RACE/TPS: Starter: Students will read four sentences that make up each of the sentences for RACE (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explanation) and place them in order. Students will check their answers with their group members before teacher goes over the answers.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDIAE: Direct Teach/Video: Japanese Society and Samurai: Teacher will go over and clarify the answers dealing with the Fujiwara family, Rise of the Samurai, Code of Bushido, and the Samurai armor and weapons. In between lectures, teacher will show video clips that has further information.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDIAE: TPS/Jigsaw: Japan Society and Samurai: Students will have 5 minutes to share their answers and discuss their findings as they Jigsaw the assignment.
Independent Practice (25 min.)

SDIAE: Chunk Reading/Lexile/Cornell Notes/Close Paragraph/Focus Notes/Infographic/Graphic Organizer/Jigsaw: Japan Society & Samurai: Students will select at random a number 1-4. This number will be associated with topic in their graphic organizer that they will be completing. Students will have the whole class period to complete it. Teacher will correct their box if they have 90% accurate information students could work on other missing assignments.

SDIAE: Chunk Reading/Lexile/Cornell Notes/Close Paragraph/Focus Notes/Infographic/Graphic Organizer/Jigsaw: Japan Society & Samurai: Students will Jigsaw their information for 5 minutes to other members of their group. Students will then make corrections on their paper as the teacher goes over the answers.

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
