Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.1: Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (e.g., significance of Roman citizenship; rights under Roman Law, Roman art, architecture, engineering, and philosophy, preservation and transmission of Christianity).
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe & Explain the lasting contributions of the Roman Republic.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter quiz based on "This Day in History" from last weeks Starters.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clip: Roman Republic: Teacher will provide a mini lecture based on Roman Republic. Information will be inlined with the Cornell Notes so students who did not complet the assignment over the weekend can complete it.
Guided Practice 5 min.)
SDAIE: Realia: Roman Aqueducts: Teacher will present a challenge to the students. Teacher will take the part of a King ruling Western Europe. Teacher will explain to the students that there are stories that in the Eastern part of the empire, water gets delivered to peoples houses. No need to go and transport water from the river. Challenge will be to create a working model on how water can be transported without buckets to peoples houses.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Video Clips/Cornell Notes: Roman Republic: Students will watch a video and answer the Cornell Notes describing the Roman Rupublic and how it influenced American government.
Homework.

1. Identifying & Describing the importance of Rome's architecture and government.

Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter based on "This Day in History" by reading a chunked section and placing the sentences in or of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE, and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Architecture and Government: Teacher will go over the directions to the assignment and answer questions prior to having the students complete their task. Teacher will introduce the close pagrapph assignment and the Cornell Notes and take questions from students.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Roman Roads: Teacher will go over and clarify the answers to the importance of Roman Roads. Students will make corrections to their assignments.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Video Clips/Close Paragraph: Roman Architecture: Students will watch short video clips describing the importance of the Roman architecture. The video will explain the importance the style of architecture like the Dome roof and the material used to make it like cement. It will also describe the technique they used.
SDAIE: Video Clips/Cornell Notes/Talking to the Text: Roman Government Students will watch short video clips describing the importance of the type of government created by the Romans and complete a set of Cornell Notes. Teacher has provided clues/hints to help student guid their listening skills.
Homework.
