Anticipatory Set (5 min.)

Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: CLOSE READ/Annotate: Geography of Rome: Teacher will lead students in a reading of the geography of Rome. Teacher will utilize talk to the text/aloud to guide students in annotating the passage to improve comprehension.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: Concept Web: Civilization: Teacher will write the word "Civilization" on the board. Students working in groups will provide with a word that represents what makes a civilization thrive. Then they will attach that word with a civilization already covered and an example. The purpose of this is to demonstrate that every society we have studied is great in its own way and was as civilized as Rome but Rome always gets all the attention due to the Eurocentric way of thinking in the past.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Group: What Defines a Civilization: Students will figure out what makes a Civilization.
