Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.

Anticipatory Set (15 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Talk to Text/annotate: Geography and Trade: Teacher will lead students on a close read of the geography and trade of Africa.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: Bill of Rights: Teacher will explain and clarify amendments 1-10 of the Bill of Rights. Students will write them down on their graphic organizer.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Focus Notes: Teacher will go over the answers to the Focus Notes of Communities and Villages.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Bill of Rights Scenarios: Teacher will go over the answers to the scenarios.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes: Early Communities and Villages: Students will complete their focus notes as they read the section in their book and take down the evidence that will answer the two essential questions guiding their reading. They will then answer an overall essential question.
8th Grade-SDAIE: QuickWrite: Scenarios: Students will be given a series of scenarios to read over. They will then explain if the scenario is unconstitutional or not by using their Bill of Rights notes that they took. They will also place a picture that deals with their bill of rights notes.
