Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Understand the origins of the scholar-official class during the Tang and Song Dynasty.
2. Understand the impact Confucius thought had on the state and the role it played in the civil service exam.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on identifying two evidence from their journal that will support the CLAIM that is provided for them.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Tang and Song Dynasty: Teacher will explain and clarify the role the state played on separating the social classes during the Tang and Song Dynasty through the development of the civil service exams inspired by Confucianism.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Tang and Song Cornell Notes: Teacher will go over the answers to the Cornell Notes and provide further explanations. Teacher will guide students in making a connection to today's world.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Talk to the Text: Tang and Song Dynasty: Students will read pages 270 and 270-271 respectively about the development of the scholar official class developing during the Tang and how it shifted during the Song Dynasty with the introduction of Confucianism.
SDAIE: Visual Collage: Tang and Song: Students will use the information they gathered through their Cornell Notes about the two Dynasties and create a visual collage that represents each of the dynasties and their importance in Imperial China. Students will then answer two essential questions.
Homework.
