Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify and analyze the actions of the British government that led to the Battle of Lexington and Concord. (8th Grade)
2. Understand the reason for creating the First Continental Congress.
3. DESCRIBE and Explain the geographical hardships associated with the Inca Empire and how they adapted. (7th Grade)
4. Identify and Understand the Inca social structure. (7th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Starter: Students will read and identify the 5 W’s of events in “This Day in History....” Teacher will go over answers with the students.
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Annotate/Think Aloud/Graphic Organizer: First Continental Congress: Teacher will close read the passage. After each paragraph teacher will use think aloud to help them annotate the passage for understanding. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Close Read/Talk to the Text: Rise of the Inca Civilization : Teacher will lead students in a Close read about the Inca civilization. Teacher will then talk to the text to guide students annotations. Students will answer an essential question. (7th Grade).
Guided Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Let the Revolution Begin: Students will watch a video clip about the events and motives behind the Lexington and Concord and answer 5 questions in complete sentences. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Sentence stem/Focus Questions: Inca Family Structure: Teacher will go over the answers to the Focus Questions and and Cornell Notes. (7th Grade)
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: First Continental Congress : Students will read and annotate the section and answer essential questions. (8th Grade)
SDAIE: Video Clips/VBQ: Let the Revolution Begin: Students will watch a video clip about the events and motives behind the Lexington and Concord and answer 5 questions in complete sentences.
SDAIE: Focus Notes/Cornell Notes: Inca Class Structure: Students will read pages 412-413 covering the Incas class structure. They will look at the duties of the Emperor, Nobles, and Commoners. Teacher will provide students with Focus Notes to guide the students note taking to complete their Cornell Notes. (7th Grade)
Homework.
EdPuzzle video clip and question due by Friday, October 9 at 5 p.m. 8th Grade "Truth about the Continental Army" and 7th Grade "5 Facts about the Inca."
Closure (5 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Remind students to turn in assignments
3. Answer any questions/concerns.
4. Exit class.
