1. Identify how the Catholic Church obtained power and wealth during the Middle Ages.
2. Understand the conflict between Pope Gregory VII and King Henry the IV.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunk section of "This Day in History" and answer the essential question in complete sentences.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk Reading/Cornell Notes/Talk to the Text: Increasing Power of the Church: Teacher will read the passages from the book on page 67. After each paragraph the students will be given time to identify the clues to select the proper notes to complete their Cornell Notes.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Graphic Organizer: Teacher will go over the answers and provide further clarification.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/talk to the text: Power of the Church: Students will read page 67 in their textbook. As they read the section they will complete their Cornell Notes in which they will discover evidence on how the church obtained and kept political power. Students will also uncover the conflict between the pope and the king and discover who held the ultimate power in Western Europe during the Middle Ages.
