Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Define the vegetation zones in Africa. (7th Grade)
2. Describe how trade brought religious and cultural changes to West Africa. (7th Grade)
3. Identify and Explain the importance of the Bill of Rights in ratifying the Constitution. (8th Grade).

Anticipatory Set (15 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Talk to Text/annotate: Geography and Trade: Teacher will lead students on a close read of the geography and trade of Africa.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Essential Question: Creating the Bill of Rights: Teacher will lead students in a close read of the issues confronting Madison when creating the Bill of Rights. Teacher will then explain the issues so students understand by using examples. Students will then answer two essential questions.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Vocabulary/Africa Vegetation Zones: Teacher will go over the answers to the tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words and provide examples. Teacher will also go over the answers to the vegetation zones found in Africa.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: Ratifying the Constitution: Teacher will review the problems faced by the delegates as they tried to ratify the Constitution. Teacher will present three points of views from the Federalist and Anti-Federalists so students could understand the concerns about the Federal Government.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Book to paper: Vocabulary Words: Students will define 6 tier 2 and 3 words and provide a picture of the definitions for each. Students will then watch short clip about the geography of Africa.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Visual/Map Skills: Africa’s Geography: Students will be given a map of Africa and a series of items to label on the map ranging from vegetation zones, rivers, and important points of interes.
8th Grade-SDAIE: QuickWrite/CER/Video Clip: Bill of Rights: Students will watch a short clip on the importance of the Bill of Rights and why it was necessary. Students will then complete a QuickWrite answering the question in 3-5 sentences using the Claim, Evidence, Reason technique.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Visual/Prior Knowledge: Bill of Rights: Students will be given a series of four pictures to see if they can identify which of the ten Bill of Rights they correspond to. This will aid a quick checking for understanding of their prior knowledge of the Bill of Rights.
