Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Stater: Students will read a passage from this day in history. They are given a Claim and will have to find two supporting evidence within the reading.
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Realia: Bread and Circus: Teacher will present students with facts about the future of our world. Point is to bring down the attitude and hope of a great future. Then teacher will show students a clip of a gladiator fight and throw candy to resemble the actions of Roman Emperors as Rome neared its end. Explain to them the idea of Bread and Circus was a way to distract citizens from the realization of the empire.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Close Read: Satire X: Teacher and students will read and discuss Juvenal's poem Satire X that was written in the 2nd century at the forefront of the Roman Empire and decipher what is it that will bring an end to the Roman Empire.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Video Based Questions/Sentence Stems/Movie Clips: Diocletian's Plan: Students will watch and answer a series of Video Based Questions that explain Diocletian's plan in saving the Roman Empire. They will also be introduced to Constantine the young commander who grows up to rule of the Roman empire, Constantinople, and eventually saves Christianity.
