Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Chunk Reading/5 W's/Text to Speech: Starter: Students will read a chunk passaged (or have it read to them) and identify the 5 W's. Reading is taken from "This Day in History" from the History Channel.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Mini Lecture/Video Clips: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will provide mini lectures and clarification for the four sections dealing with Maya religious beliefs and practices; Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok a Tok, and Sacred Rounds. Each section will be followed by visuals of said locations or short video clips that covers further information about the topic.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Teacher will review the answers to each of the four sections of the unit dealing with the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds section from the text. Students will make corrections on their papers.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Jigsaw: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Students will share their findings with their group members as they jigsaw their answers to the section they were reading and finding information. The student presenting will talk in a voice level 2 as the other members of the group write down the information in purple font. Students will be given 6-7 minutes per section to share out there section which will then be followed up by the teachers direct teaching for further clarification.
SDAIE: Close paragraph: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Students will use the information they received from their group members and the corrections they made after listening to the teacher to complete the close paragraph that summarizes how religion shaped Mayan daily life and society during the Classic Mayan Period (250-900 C.E.)

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: 5 W’s: Students will work on identifying the 5 W’s on a short reading from “This day in History.”
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Model: Maya Religious Beliefs & Practice: Teacher will model how to complete the Jigsaw assignment by going over the introduction and using Talk to Text to come up with the note using the hint that is provided. After students are all done with their assignment Teacher will go over each of the four sections clarify the Maya's religious beliefs and practice and provide a short video clip that goes along with one of the four categories discussed from the text.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Teacher will review the answers to each of the four sections of the unit dealing with the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds section from the text.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: JigSaw/Chunk Reading/TPS/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Maya Religious Beliefs and Practice: Students will select one of the four readings that will be chunked and provided by the teacher for each section. Each section will have a selected chunk reading that covers the Maya Gods, Offerings and Sacrifices, Pok-a-tok, and Sacred Rounds from the textbook page 378-379. The reading will be chunked to two paragraphs about 9 sentences. Students will use that reading to gather information for their topics. Once they are done with that each student will then share their findings and teach the other members of their group about their topic as the other members write down their notes in their Cornell Note section of the Graphic Organizers.
