Direct Practice. (10 min)
SDAIE: Close Read/Annotated/Essential Question: Pilgrimage and Crusades: Teacher will lead students in a close reading that explains the difference between a pilgrimage and a crusade. Students will be asked to annotate the reading and guided by a hint at the end of each paragraph. Students will answer two essential questions.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: The Story of the Crusades: Teacher will go over the answer to the Cornell Notes and provide further explanation.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Talk to the Text: The Story of the Crusades: Students will read page 163 in their textbook. They will complete their Cornell Notes which on their graphic organizer are hints that will guide them to the proper Note that they should be getting from the reading that will help them understand the second objective.
SDAIE: VBQ: The Crusaders: Students will watch a video clip about the First Crusades and it goes along with the reading but will bring new insight about the topic and the social and political state the Middle Ages was in at that time. Students will answer 5 questions from the video.
SDAIE: Primary Source/Chunk Reading/Realia: In His own Words: Students will read two short passages from Pope Urban II speech in Clermont that launched the Crusades. Students will explain the task of the crusades and reward that all who embark on that journey will obtain. Students will role play a scenario dealing with the Crusades which would lead to one student being knighted.
