Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3.3: Analyze the influences of Confucianism and changes in Confucian thought during the Sung and Mongol periods.
7.3.4: Understand the importance of both overland trade and maritime expeditions between China and other civilizations in the Mongol Ascendancy and Ming Dynasty.
8.5.2: Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced west ward expansion and the Mexican-American War.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/Realia: Civil Service Exam #2: Teacher will lead students in a mock dynasty test similar to those given during the time to achieve access to government jobs. This is to demonstrate how Khan brought the exams back since he respected the education system in China.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/EQ: Monroe Doctrine: Teacher will clarify and explain the Monroe Doctrine and go over the question’s students had to answer.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: The Mongols VBQ: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the questions dealing with the Mongols.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Monroe Doctrine Political Cartoon: Teacher will go over the political cartoon to explain what each element of the picture is explaining the Monroe Doctrine.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: VBQ: The Mongols VBQ: Students will watch a video clip about the invasion of the Mongols and how they shaped China socially and politically. They will answer a series of questions as they watch the clips in complete questions.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Political Cartoon: Monroe Doctrine PC: Students will analyze a political cartoon dealing with the Monroe Doctrine. Students will explain how the picture is explaining the impact of the Monroe Doctrine.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition: Tombstones: Students will go over the first six presidents and write a memorable eulogy on their tombstone. Acts as a review of previous presidents and their impact on foreign affairs.
