Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Understand the impact the fall of Constantinople had on Western Europe.
2. Identify the changes being made in Western Europe during the Renaissance.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will take their Starter Quiz based on last weeks starters from "This day in History."
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Chunking: Fall of Constantinople: Teacher will lead students on a chunked reading about the fall of Constantinople taken from the novel The Fall of Constantinople, 1453 by Steven Runciman.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Fall of Constantinople TRQ: Students will share their TRQ with the other members of their group.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: TRQ/Chunking/Video Clip/VBQ: Fall of Constantinople: Students will answer three questions based on the chunked reading of the fall of Constantinople. Questions 2 and 3 are DOK 3 level type questions were they will have to comprehend the reading and infer what it telling them about who started the Renaissance and why. If students have trouble with the questions, they will also watch a short video clip describing the impact the fall of Constantinople had in Europe and answer the Video Based Question.
SDAIE: Whisper Read/Text to read/Cornell Notes/Talk to the text: What was the Renaissance: Students will read the section What was the Renaissance on page 462 in their textbook and the reading has also been added to their Google Classroom Stream both in English and Spanish by the teacher. Students who wish to use their headphones to have it read to them can use the PDF version provided in Google Classroom. As the students read their passage, they will complete their Cornell Notes in which they have been provided by hints using the Talk to the text strategy by the teacher to guide their reading and increase their comprehension.
