Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Analyze and explain the important Chinese discoveries and inventions made by China in the Middle Ages.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will take their Starter Quiz based on last weeks starters.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Inventions: Teacher will show students 10 pictures that deal with 10 of the inventions or discoveries that were made by China. Students will be asked to guess what the invention is and how it works.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Discoveries and Inventions: Teacher will go over the answers once all the students have gone around and shared their discoveries.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Carousel: Discoveries and Inventions: Students will be given a number from 1-10. The number that is assigned to them will be the invention that they will research by reading the portion of the book that is assigned to that invention. They are provided with guiding questions so that they can write a 2-3 brief summary of the history and significance of the invention. Once they complete their own, students will go around the room exchange their information with another one from their classmates.
Homework.
