Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.2: Analyze the importance of family, labor specialization, and regional commerce in the development of states and cities in West Africa.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Understand the importance of the Trans Saharan Trade route in West Africa.
2. Explain the hardships of labor specialization in mining and transporting salt in West Africa.
3. Identify the factors leading to the fall of Ghana and rise of Mali.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read and answer the essential question from the "This Day in History" Starter.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Think Aloud: Salt Mining: Teacher will use think aloud to have students tell me the notes they acquired from the short video in which they were to take notes. Notes will center around the hardships of mining salt in West Africa and why they continue to do it to this point. As students share their notes teacher will write them on the board and elaborate further on the topic.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/CER: QuickWrite: Teacher will use the notes that were given by the students to write a class answer to the writing prompt using the CER method. Students will compare their writing to that of the groups and identify what they are missing in their writing.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Video Based Question/Notes/CER: Salt Mining: Students will watch a short National Geographic video clip about salt mining in West Africa. Students will be asked to write down all the hardships the come with salt mining. Then using those notes they will write their answer to the writing prompt by using Claim, Evidence, and Reason.
SDAIE: Carousel/Whisper Read: Decline of Ghana Rise of Mali: Students will be assign one question out of four to answer from the reading. Once they answer their question they will be allowed to go around the room and share their answers until all four questions are answered.
Homework.
