4. Explain how the Aztecs evolved from a few cities to an empire.

Anticipatory Set (3 min):
Daily Journal: Students will read and identify the 5 W's from today's "This Day in History" section.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Chunk/Annotate: Aztec Rise to Power: Teacher will Cloze read the Aztec Introduction section. Will summarize the key points of the reading and add further information. Will help students make a connection.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Think Aloud/Annotate: Aztec Rise to Power : Teacher will use think aloud to guide students in annotating the passage. Teacher will go further from the reading and help students make a connections. (7th Grade).
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Think Aloud/Annotate: Aztec Rise to Power : Students will annotate the passage of the Aztecs. That will be followed by an essential question based on the reading. Students will then watch a video clip dealing with the Aztec rise to power based on what they read (video will help visual learners comprehend what they read).
SDAIE: Picture Annotate: Aztec Rise to Power : Students will look at an Aztec Codex and decipher the origins of the Aztec civilization. They will be asked to identify pictures of the codex that goes along with reading and explain its origins. They will use the reading to help them explain the codex.

SDAIE: Direct Teach: Mayan Review: Teacher will go over the directions and explain where to find the answers. Then explain to students the recent develops with this mystery as archeologists use the latest technology to further understand what happened.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Maya Review: Teacher will go over the answers with the students. Students will be selected at random to answer one of the 9 questions of the review.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Metacognition: Mayan Review: Students will have to answer 9 questions that deal with the origins, rise, fall, and achievements of the Mayan Civilization.
SDAIE: Video Clip/QuickWrite: Mayan Downfall "Unexplained": Student will watch a video clip that shows the most recent data explaining what happened to the Mayan Civilization and will be asked to critique it.
Homework
Complete Edpuzzle "The Mayan Disappearance" due September 17, 2021.
