Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.4: Trace the growth of the Arabic language in government, trade, and Islamic scholarship in West Africa.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of the Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
8.3.4. Understand how the conflicts between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton resulted in the emergence of two political parties (e.g., view of foreign policy, Alien and Sedition Acts, economic policy, National Bank, funding and assumption of the revolutionary debt).

3. Understand and explain the Alien and Sedition Act of 1798. (8th Grade)

Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach: West Africa Test: Teacher will give out directions to the test and show students how to log into Edulastic.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Annotate/Direct Teach Election of 1796: Teacher will close read two paragraphs dealing with the election of 1796. Students will use that information to create two political campaign banners to promote the both candidates.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Progress Monitor: West Africa Test: Teacher will progress monitor students taking the test. Teacher will reach out to parents who’s students aren’t taking the test but are logged on.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Alien and Sedition Act: Teacher will go over the answer and provide further explanation and information about the Alien and Sedition Act.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition: West Africa Test: Students will take a test on West Africa covering the geography, political, social, and economical status of the region.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition: Make Up Work: After students are done with the test they will work on missing assignments.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Whisper Read/Graphic Organizer: Alien and Sedition Act: Students will the section dealing with the Alien and Sedition Act. As they read they will take down notes explaining what it is, who it affected and if it violated the Bill of Rights by naming the Amendment .
Homework.
