7.2.2: Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including Islamic teachings on the connection with Judaism and Christianity.
7.2.4: Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (15 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/Executive Branch: Teacher will read the selection of the executive branch and provide clarification and examples of what is going on. Students will complete a graphic organizer were they will identify problems and solution that underline the executive branch.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunk Read/Annotate: Quran’ and Sunnah: Teacher will lead students in a chunked reading and annotation dealing with the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Students will answer the two essential questions.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: The executive Branch: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the creation of the executive branch.
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: 5 Pillars of Islam: Teacher and students will review their answers to the Five Pillars of Islam.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Video Clip/VBQ: Electoral College: Students will watch a video clip and answer 6 video based questions from the video. Students will then get additional questions on researching how many electoral colleges are in California and their close states.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking: Five Pillars of Islam: Students will read chunked sections of the textbook that cover the 5 pillars of Islam. They will then fill in a table that has them identify and explain the pillar how its practiced and will attach a picture.
