7.7.3: Explain how and where each empire arose and how the Aztec and Incan Empires were defeated by the Spanish.

I am learning about what led to the rise of the Inca civilization.
1. Identify the Inca Empire and its earliest societies.
2. Undersand the legends of the rise of the Inca civilization.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Evidence: Students will read a chunked section of "This day in History" and provide the evidence within the reading that will help answer the essential question.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Video Clip: Rise of the Inca Civilization: Teacher will close read the geography section on pg. 410 that introduces the students to the overview of Inca empire. They will be able to understand the size of the empire, population, present day location, and the years it was active. Students will then see a video clip that shows the same thing.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS:Rise of the Inca Civilization: Teacher will go over the answer to the Map challenge and the Cornell Notes that denotes the early civilizations of the empire.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Map Visuals/chunk reading/Cornell Notes: Rise of Inca Civilization: Students will complete a Map Challenge acivity were they will identify the Inca empire by coloring in the empire on the map, identifying the Andes mountains, and labeling present day countries that made up the empire. Students will then read two chunked paragraphs that provide information about the two earliest civilizations of the Incas; the Moches and the Chimu and complete the Cornell Notes.
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Chunked Reading/Cornell Notes: Beginnings of the Empire: Students will select the section to read that explains the three legends of how the Inca civilization began. Students will read their chunked section they selected and complete their Cornell Notes. Once each member of the group is done, they will share their knowledge with the other members and share their answers.
