7.3: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of China in the Middle Ages.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.
8.4.1: Describe the country’s physical landscapes, political divisions, and territorial expansion during the terms of the first four presidents.

Students will be able to:
1. Understand the evolution of Buddhism in the Gupta Empire. (7th Grade)
2. Explain the legal impact of Marbury v. Madison. (8th Grade).
3. Identify the international problems plaguing Jefferson’s Presidency. (8th Grade)

Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read/Annotate/Talk to Text: Rise of Buddhism: Teacher will read and guide students in annotating by using talk to the text in the section dealing with the rise of Buddhism in the Gupta Empire. Students will answer the essential questions. Teacher will provide further explanation.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Chunk/Close Read/Annotate/Talk to Text: International Problems: Teacher will lead students in a chunked reading of the International problems plaguing Jefferson during is Presidency. These are the Barbary Wars and the Embargo Act of 1807. Teacher will explain why they were important events and how Jefferson’s political views helped make the decisions he did.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/VBQ: Hinduism: Teacher will go over the answers to VBQ dealing with Hinduism.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Direct Teach: Marbury v. Madison: Teacher will go over the answers dealing with the Midnight Judges and the impact Marbury v. Madison had on the Judicial branch. This was assigned to be completed by students on their own time.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: VBQ: Evolution of Buddhism: Students will watch a video and answer questions dealing of the evolution of Buddhism. They will learn the goal of Buddhism and the origins from which it came from.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Realia/Role Play/QuickWrite: Not So Easy Being President: Students will take the roll of Washington, Adams, and Hamilton. Using the First Peron point of view they will have to answer to Jefferson action. They will be given hints on how Jefferson acted during Washington’s decision of neutrality, Adams’ actions during the XYZ Affair and Hamilton’s economic plan. Students will throw shade on Jefferson using the voices of those three characters.
