Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of China in the Middle Ages.
8.5 Students analyze U.S. foreign policy in the early Republic.
8.5.1 Understand the political and economic causes and consequences of the War of 1812 and know the major battles, leaders, and events that led to a final peace.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain and Identify the geography of China. (7th Grade)
2. Identify the factors that lead Madison and the War Hawks into war in 1812 (8th Grade).

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (10 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and answer the daily essential question using the information in the short passage.
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Annotating/Talk to Text: China’s Geography: Teacher will lead students in chunk reading dealing with China’s Geography. Teacher will use talk to the text to guide students in their annotation. Students will answer the essential question.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Chunking/Cloze Paragraph/Video Clip: National Anthem: Teacher will introduce the origins of the National Anthem. Students will be asked to fill in the missing words from the National Anthem. Teacher will play Whitney Huston singing the National Anthem to help them complete the task. Students will answer the essential question.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Map of China: Teacher and students will go over the item’s students were instructed to label on their map.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Want Peach…Prepare for War: Teacher will go over the focus notes answers students were instructed to identify during their independent practice.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Book to Paper: Map of China: Students will be given instructions on what items to label on their map. Students will use the map of china to help them identify the key areas.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes/Chunk Reading/Graphic Organizer: You Want Peace…Prepare for War: Students will read section 6 pages 232-233 of the textbook. Students will use the reading to identify the reasons for going to war. Students will be guided by two focus questions in which students will identify the evidence in the focus notes section of the graphic organizer.
Homework.
