Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5: Students analyze the geographical, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Japan.
7.5.1: Describe the significance of Japan's proximity to China and Korea and the intellectual, linguistic, religious, and philosophical influence of those countries.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective/Learning Intent)
Today I am learning about the impact Japan's neighbors had by:
1. Identifying the tier 2 and 3 vocabulary terms that dealt with how Japan's neighbors influenced their culture.
2. Analyzing the impact their neighbor's had on Japan's social, political, and economic success.
Common Core Literacy Standard:
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDIAE: TPS/CER: Starter: Students will work on identifying the CLAIM from the chunked reading from "This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (I Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: Direct Teach: GeoChallenge_Map Skills: Teacher will lecture as we go over the answers and provide further explanation of the Map skills questions. Students will use this time to correct their answers. Teacher will provide further examples on how Japans location could have been an advantage or disadvantage, what type of economic would be form, etc.
SDIAE: Direct Teach: Influence of Japan Vocabulary: Teacher will go over direction on how to answer their vocabulary and present the new section of the word dealing with social, political, economic, and religion.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: Sentence Stems: GeoChallenge_Map Skills: Students will complete a sentence stems for their 5 questions dealing with their map skilled questions. Teacher will go over the answers with the students.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (20 min.)
SDIAE: TPS/Sentence Stems: GeoChallenge_Map Skills: Students will work with their groups to analyze the maps of Japan and answer 5 questions at level of DOK 3 and 4. Students will have to justify each of their answers from information they gather by using the map and information from other units.
SDIAE: Metacognition: Influence on Japan Vocabulary: Students will answer four tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words using the 4 square method in which they will write their own definition, impact on Japan, part of society, and finally adding an image.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: Japan Geography due by Friday at 5 p.m.
