Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about Maya society by:
Clasifying & Identifying the Mayan social heirarchy system.
Understanding Mayan Family life.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
RH7: Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources.
WHST 9: Draw evidence from information texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/5 W's/TPS: Starter: Students will read and identify the 5 W's from the chunked passge taken from "This day in History" website.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked Reading/Close Read/Talking to Text/Model/Reading in Spanish/Video Clip: Mayan Class Structure: Teacher will Cloze Read the first chunk section dealing with the Ruler. Teacher will then model what is important from the passage by highlighting it on the passage. Students will then watch a short video clip about Mayan Rulers. This will be followed by the notes tha would have to be taken explaining each of the classes jobs and responsibilities.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/VIP's: Mayan Class Structure : Teacher will go over the answers to the section dealing with Maya Class Structure and students will make correction in red as needed on their papers. Teacher would have already checked students who finished on time and made notes on their paper so students can change the note.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Chunked reading/lexile/Text to Speech/VIP's/TPS: Maya Class Structure: Students will continue with reading the last three chunked passages dealing with the Mayan Class Structure; Merchants and Artisans, Peasants, Slaves. Studens will have 7 minutes to finish each of these section, be verified by the teacher and then go over the answers. Students will make changes as needed.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: Mayan 101 due Friday by 5 p.m.
Closure (3 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Dismiss Class.
Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.

2. Explain how the social pyramid reflected the structure of Maya society and the role family members played.

Starter: Metacognition: Students will take their quiz based on last weeks Starters.
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach: Mayan Class Structure: Teacher will cover each of the social class structures of the Maya and provide further examples of each class duty and responsibility. Teacher will show three video clips that will help visualize the importance of the Creation of the Maya, Importance of Jade, and how Maya obtained slaves.
Guided Practice (X min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Mayan Class Structure: As teacher is lecturing about the social class students will write down any missing information in red in their notes. Students will check their work.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Jigsaw/TPS/Group/Chunked Reading: Maya Class Structure: Students will be grouped in 3's or 4 and will be assigned a number which corresponds to one of the 4 remaining Mayan Class structures in the book. Student will then read the class structure section on page 374-375 and complete the class structure pyramid by identifying the roles and responsibilities of that class. Once they have completed that, each member will share their class role and responsibility with remaining members of the group. As one presents, the others will write down the notes.
Homework
Complete Edpuzzle "The Great Mayan Disappearance" due Friday, September 2, 2022.
