7.2.2: Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including Islamic teachings on the connection with Judaism and Christianity.
7.2.4: Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read their starters, write a question (DOK 1) and then underline or highlight the answer within the text.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk Read/Annotate: Jihad and Shari'ah: Teacher will lead students in a chunked reading from the textbook dealing with jihad and Shari'ah. Teacher will use Close reading to help students decipher the words and the second reading with student along with the Cornell Notes will be done to earn comprehension.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Cornell Notes: Teacher and students will review their answers to the Cornell Notes based on the reading of Jihad and Shari'ah.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes: Jihad & Shari'ah: Students will complete a series of Cornell Notes based on Jihad and Shari'ah. Students will find the important information that will help them explain the meaning and importance of each. The Cornell Notes are labeled with guiding hints provided by the teacher to guide students in obtaining the appropriate information.
SDAIE: VBQ: Muslim Contributions: Students will watch three short video clips that will inform them of the contributions made by Muslims. They will watch a video then answer a question. The contributions deal with contributions made in the field of academics, technology, and science.
