Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.2: Analyze the importance of family, labor specialization, and regional commerce in the development of states and cities in West Africa.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will take their Starter Quiz based on the last weeks starters.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Realia/Role Play: Inflation: Teacher will role play a scenario in which students will understand the meaning of inflation. Two items will be auctioned before and after money is thrown into society. Students will see that once more money was introduced the same items sold for more money. Teacher will direct teach the impact the stimulus package his having on the U.S. right now and bridge it to Mali's empire Mansa Musa.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Close Read/Annotate: Mali Government and Culture: Teacher will close read two primary sources from Ibn Battuta's travel that explains Mali's government and the impact Mansa Musa had on the Economy of Egypt while highlighting the wealth of his Kingdom.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Video Based Question/Notes/CER: Salt Mining: Students will watch a short National Geographic video clip about salt mining in West Africa. Students will be asked to write down all the hardships the come with salt mining. Then using those notes they will write their answer to the writing prompt by using Claim, Evidence, and Reason.
SDAIE: Carousel/Whisper Read: Decline of Ghana Rise of Mali: Students will be assign one question out of four to answer from the reading. Once they answer their question they will be allowed to go around the room and share their answers until all four questions are answered.
