7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Mayan achievements by:
Summarizing the mathematical contributions of the the Maya.
Identifying & Understanding the Maya's most valuable resource.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 1: Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Chunk Reading/5 W's/Text to Speech: Starter: Students will read a chunk passaged (or have it read to them) and identify the 5 W's. Reading is taken from "This Day in History" from the History Channel.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach: Maya Achievements: Teacher will go over the directions on how to complete the assignment dealing with the Mayan achievements. Teacher will explain that students will have 12 minutes to complete each section and where to find the answers. Students without computers will be given readings to complete the sections. For Periods 5 and 6 teacher will scaffold the entire box 1 assignment.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Scaffold/Direct Teach/Video Clip/Graphic Organizer: Mayan Achievements: Teacher will go over the answers to the Maya achievements, provide further explanations and show video clips. For Periods 5 and 6, teacher will break down and scaffold the close paragraph in section. Teacher will scaffold the video into three parts and after each portion of the video is shown teacher will have students within their group try and figure the answer.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Close Paragraph/Cornell Notes/Focus Notes/VBQ/Video Clips: Mayan Achievements: Students will be able to identify and describe the Mayan achievements dealing with the creation of the zero, building aqueducts, astronomy, and building of roads. Students will be given 12 minutes per section to watch a video and completing their graphic organizer that has a close paragraph, Cornell notes, focus notes, and video based questions.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: due Friday by 5 p.m.
Closure (3 min.)
1. Clean up.
2. Dismiss Class.
Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
