Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3.1: Describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the spread of Buddhism in Tang China, Korea, and Japan.
7.3.3: Analyze the influence of Confucianism and changes in Confucian thought during the Song and Mongol periods.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Trace the origins of the meritocracy system under the Song Dynasty.
2. Identify and Understand the philosophical teachings of Confucius.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read their chunked "This Day in History" that is out of order and will have to identify the Claim/Topic sentence.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Song Dynasty: Teacher will direct students to the reading. For those students who want to use their headphones and listen to it being read can do so. From the reading students will place 6 pictures in order and provide a brief explanation. By doing so students would be able to trace the origins of the new form of government created by the Song Dynasty, meritocracy.
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Confucius Teachings: Teacher will discuss the teachings of Confucius and clarify the four philosophies of Confucius and how it impacted the Song Dynasty.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Video Clips: Song Dynasty: Teacher will go over the answers and provide further clarification and examples to ensure students understand the concept. Students will make corrections to their answers.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Whisper Read/Audio Book: Meritocracy Song Dynasty: Students will have the option of reading or listening to the passage being read by chromebook. As students read the passage, they will be placing the events in order and providing a brief explanation of how the Song Dynasty tried to improve the government from that of the Tang Dynasty.
SDAIE: Video Cornell Notes/Video Clip: Who Was Confucius: Students will watch a short video clip about the life and teachings of Confucius. As students watch the video they will complete their Cornell Notes identifying Confucius life, teachings, and purpose of his philosophy.
Homework.
