Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5.2: Discuss the reign of Prince Shotoku of Japan and the Characteristics of Japanese society and family life during his reign.
7.5.3: Describe the values, social customs, and traditions prescribed by the lord-vassal system consisting of shogun, daimyo, and samurai and the lasting influence of the warrior code in the twentieth century.
7.5.6: Analyze the rise of the military society in the late twentieth century and the role of the samurai in that society.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective/Learning Intent)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe the rise of the Fujiwara family during the Heian Period.
2. Trace the rise of the samurai.
3. Identify the impact Bushido had on the samurai way of life.
4. Describe the importance of the samurais armor and weapons.

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

SDIAE: Metacognition: Starter Quiz: Students will complete their Starter Quiz based on last weeks starters from "This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (I Do…) (10 min.)
SDIAE: Direct Teach: Buddhism and Daoism: Teacher will provide a mini lecture between clarifying the work students have completed during the independent practice. Teacher will also provide short video clips that provide further examples. Clarification will provide understanding of the content and help students understaind the 4 Noble Truth from Buddhism and the origins and practice of Daoism.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (X min.)
SDIAE: Progress Monitor: Buddhism and Daoism: Teacher will progress monitor students as they complete the Video Based Questions on Buddhism and also during the Video Based Cornell Notes for Daoism.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (15 min.)
SDIAE: Video Clips/Graphic Organizer/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Buddhism and Daoism: Students will watch a short video clip that discusses the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism and be able to explain each step. Students will then apply how they interpret those truths. Students will then complete Video Cornell Notes based on the the origins of Daoism. Students will understand how it started, the practice, and the belief it teaches.
