7.1.2: Discuss the geographical borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Describe and Identify the expanding territories of Rome through the events of the Punic Wars.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will complete their daily starter based on "This Day in History." Students will be given a reading that is out of order. Students will have to rad and place the reading in order of CLAIM, STATEMENT, EVIDENCE and CONCLUSION.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Close Read/Video Clip/Chunking: The Punic Wars...Setting the Stage: Teacher will lead students in a close chunked reading dealing with how the Punic Wars started and why Rome and Carthage would be facing off. Students will watch a clip in which they will have to decide who the protagonist and the antagonist are according to them. Teacher will Direct Teach and clarify information from the Cornell Notes when going over the answer.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Video Clips: Map Activity/EQ: Teacher will guide students in shading in a map to depict the both sides of the Punic Wars. After each close paragraph is read, students will be directed by teacher to shade in the area by using either green or orange. Students will be given time to complete it on their own before the teacher goes over it. Students will answer two essential questions and use the information from the video clips to justify their answer.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Group/Chunked Reading/Annotate/Cornell Notes/TPS/Video Clips: Punic Wars...Road to Expansion CN: Students will work in groups of four. Each student will chose a number that is associated to a chunked reading. Students will read their passage and annotate the information that is hinted on in their Cornell Notes. Once students have completed their section, teacher will direct each member to share and discuss the notes they got with the rest of their group members. They will write these answer in purple. After each section is done teacher will go over them by short lectures. Once all members have shared their answers, students would have understand and explain how Rome was able to expand their territories during the Punic Wars.
