Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilization of Medieval Japan.
7.5.1: Describe the significance of Japan's proximity to China and Korea and the intellectual, linguistic, religious, and philosophical influence of those countries on Japan.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Understand and describe how neighboring countries influenced medieval Japan.
2. Identify the country of origins that influenced some of America's well known inventions.

RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will complete the Daily Journal. Students are given the claim and a section to read. Students are to find two evidences that will support the Claim that is given.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Book to Paper/Echo Read: Tier II and III Vocabulary: Teacher will go over the directions on defining the terms that will be used in the Unit of Japan. Teacher will go over the pronunciation of the terms and have students echo the term back.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Tier II and III: Teacher will go over the answers to the terms.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Internet: American or Not: Students will analyze 5 pictures. They will highlight the aspect of culture that is being represented in column two. In column three students will guess if the invention came from America or another country and right it down. Finally students will use the internet to figure out the place of origin.
SDAIE: Whisper Read/Cornell Notes/Talk to Text: Cultural Influence on Japan: Students will read page 322 and complete the Cornell Notes. The Cornell notes have hints that will guide the students to the answer. Guide their reading to improve their comprehension and help them understand objective one.
Homework.
