Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.3: Describe the establishment by Constantine of the new capital in Constantinople and the development of the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on the consequences of the development of two distinct European civilizations, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic, and their two distinct views on church-state relations.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Byzantine Empire by:
1. Identify the importance of the royal color.
2. Describe how the royal color was made during the Byzantine Empire
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Starter Quiz: Students take a quiz based on last weeks starters.
Direct Instruction (5 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach: Meaning of Color: Teacher will display three colors; blue, red, yellow. Teacher will ask students to discuss what they think the meaning of those colors are, hear some suggestions, and then go over it.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: Close Reading/Chunk Reading/Textile level: Royal Color: Teacher will close read the chunked passage taken from the book Women in Purple by Judith Herren in where she introduces the importance of the royal color.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Paragraph/Annotate/Visual/Close Paragraph/EQ: Royal Color: Students will be annotate the passage describing what is the royal color and why it was important. Students will annotate and answer the essential question. Students will then watch a video clip about how the Royal Color was made and use the information from the video to complete the close paragraph.
Homework.
Complete any missing assignments on the Byzantine Empire.
Closure (3 min.)

Teacher will then discuss the importance of those colors in society. This is the anticipatory set to transition into the importance of color and to introduce the royal color.
