Locate on maps and globes the seven continents.

Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the geography of the world by:
Explaining the formation of the continents through Pangea.
Identifying and Labeling how the equator and prime meridian create hemispsheres.
Locating absolute location using latitude and longitude.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
SDAIE: Chunk Reading/5 W's: Starter: Students will read a chunk passage from History's "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's by highlighting them in the passage by color.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Cloze Read/Talk to Text/Annotate: Pangea: Teacher will read a passage explaining the formation of the continents through Pangea and plate tectonics. Students will be guided in talking to the text to annotate the passage and then answer two essential questions.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Geography Pangea: Teacher will go over the to the sections of the Graphic organizer once students have completed a portion of the assignment on their own for a chunked period of time.
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach/Sentence Stems: Equator and Prime Meridian: Teacher will model to students the location of the imaginary lines of the equator and prime meridian on the globe. Students will be asked to label these lines and label the hemisphere's they create.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Annotate/Sentence Stem/Essential Question/Lexile Level: Pangea: Students will answer the essential question following the close reading and annotation of the passage dealing with Pangea. Reading of the passage as been dropped in lexile level to help with their reading understanding.
SDAIE: Model/Essential Question/Sentence Stems: Equator and Prime Meridian: Students will follow along with the teacher as they label the equator and prime meridian on two globes and make notes on them. Students will then use those diagrams to answer two essential questions in complete sentences.
Homework.

Lesson Modifications for GATE, RSP, and EL Students
EL: Projector (visuals), questioning, chunking, cognitive words, repetition, translation in Spanish.
RSP: Projector (visuals), questioning, modified assignments, check for understandings.
GATE: Require answers that will demonstrate depth and complexity of fertilization.
