Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso-American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso-American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Aztecs by:
Identifying lasting achievements, origins, social, political, and economical accomplishments..
Explaining the rise, achievements, religious, social, and origins of the Aztecs
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journal: Students will locate the 5 W's from the chunk passage of "This Day in History"
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
SDAIE:Direct Teach: Machu Picchu Analyze: Teacher will display the picture of Machu Picchu from the textbook page 408. Students will analyze that picture and using their knowledge of the Aztec and Maya civilization would explain what evidence of a civilization they see within that picture alone.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Think Aloud: Machu Picchu: Teacher will use think aloud to guide students in jogging their memory of what constitutes a civilization by making vague references to Machu Picchu. Teacher will use word progression to get students to the answer as they mention the observations they make in the picture.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: metacognition/visuals/video clips: Tier 3 Vocabulary: Students will define 4 terms dealing with the Inca Unit. They will be asked to place the definition in their own words and provide a picture or visual of said term. While students work on that teacher will play video clips of Machu Picchu that demonstrates their architecture, roads, and civilizations.
Homework.
