1. Describing the rise of the Fujiwara family during the Heian Period.
2. Explaining the social position and hierarchy in the Heian court.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
ELD Strategy: Metacognition/CER/Chunk Reading: Starter Quiz: Students will complete their daily starter based on the reading from "This Day in History." Students will identify at least two evidences that will support the claim provided by the teacher.
Direct Instruction (I Do…) (10 min.)
ELD Strategy: Close Read: Rise of the Fujiwara Family: Teacher will lead students in a Close Reading from the TCI textbook page 333 for decoding. After each paragraph students will go back and re-read the section for comprehension.
Guided Practice (We Do…) (10 min.)
ELD Strategy: Cornell Notes/TPS: Rise of the Fujiwara Family: Teacher will go over the answers to the Cornell Notes dealing with the rise of the Fujiwara family and provide clarification.
Independent Practice (You Do…) (20 min.)
ELD Strategy: Cornell Notes/Choral Response: Rise of the Fujiwara Family: Students will re-read the section on page 333 dealing with the Rise of the Fujiwara family and complete their Cornell Notes that has choral responses to aide them in finding the answers that describes how the Fujiwara family came to power.
ELD Strategy: Whipser Read/TPS/Close Paragraph/Text to Speech: Social Position in the Heian Court: Students will read or listen to the audio reading of the hierarchy of the Heian court. Students will use the information from the reading to complete the close paragraph summary created by the teacher that explains the hierarchy and role of the Heian court.
