Correlation to State Content Standards
7.5.3: Describe the importane of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
I am learning about the the roles and methods used by the griots in preserving history in West Africa by:
1. Identifying and Explaining the cultural significance and role of the griots.
2. Assessing the methods used by griots in preserving their history and traditions.
3. Making connections to proverbs and folktales in modern day America.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read a chunked passage from "This day in History" and be able identify evidence to support the topic sentence provided by the teacher.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Direct Teach/Sentence stems: Origns of African Griots: Teacher will go over the directions to the assignment telling student they will need their headphones. Students without their computer will be reading pages 250-251 from their textbooks to answer the questions. Teacher will demonstrate with students how to use the question to begin their sentence stems. Teacher will go over the answers with the students
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Close Read/Cornell Notes/Talk to the text: West African Oral & Written Traditions: Teacher will close read the first paragraph along with the students. After each paragraph teacher will use talk to the text to help students find the notes to complete their Cornell Notes. Short videos depicting folktales will be shown between the three sections of the reading that deal with modern day folktales. Students will discuss with their table groups to discuss the question dealing with the video.
Independent Practice (20 min.)
SDAIE: Cornell Notes/Whisper Read/TPS/Talk to the Text/Audio: West African Oral & Written Traditions: Students will read page 251 in their textbook and complete their Cornell Notes. Students who want can use their headphones and the TCI to have the sections read to them. Students will then share their notes with their classmates to ensure they are correct.
SDAIE: TPS/Graphic Organizer: African Proverbs: Students will be given three African proverbs and discuss them with their table group members to uncover the meaning of the proverbs. Once they review their answers they will write down a current proverb that they have heard that means the same thing thus connecting proverbs to modern day America. For homework, Students will go home and talk to their parents, uncles, aunts, etc., and ask them for a proverb that has been told to them.
