Correlation to State Content Standards
7.3.1: Describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the spread of Buddhism in Tang China, Korea, and Japan.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty..
2. Describe the role of the aristocracy under the Tang Dynasty.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Starter: Students will read their chunked "This Day in History" that is out of order and will have to identify the Claim/Topic sentence.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Model/Tang and Song Dynasty: Teacher will go over the directions to the next two sections of the work. For the Tang Dynasty students will select one question out of four. They will read their selected reading provided by teacher which will be chunked for them. Students will annotate the answer to their question and complete their answer. For the Song, Teacher will direct students to the reading. From the reading students will place 6 pictures in order and provide a brief explanation. By doing so students would be able to trace the origins of the new form of government created by the Song Dynasty, meritocracy.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/Video Clips: Tang and Song Dynasty: Teacher will go over the answers and provide further clarification and examples to ensure students understand the concept. Students will make corrections to their answers.
Independent Practice (25 min.)
SDAIE: Jigsaw/Sentence Stems/chunking/TPS: Aristocracy: Tang Dynasty: Students will be giving a chunked passage from the text that corresponds to the number they selected. Before reading their passage they will write their sentence stems. Students will then read the passage twice. On the second reading students will highlight the evidence that will answer their question. Students will then share out their answers in order.
Homework.

Closure (5 min.)
