Correlation to State Content Standards
7.7.2: Study the roles of people in each society, including class structures, family life, war fare, religious beliefs and practices, and slavery.
7.7.5: Describe the Meso American achievements in astronomy and mathematics, including the development of the calendar and the Meso American knowledge of seasonal changes to the civilizations’ agricultural systems.
8.1.1: Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Categorize the strengths and weakness for the Continental and British Army. (8th Grade).
2. Explain why Washington decided to cross the Delaware River. (8th Grade)
4. Assessed on the origins, social, political, and achievements of the Inca civilization. (7th Grade)
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Direct Teach/Video Clip: Washington Crossing the Delaware: Teacher will provide details and why Washington decided to take that plan of action. This will be done by analyzing a passage in which Howe is giving soldiers a pardon if they leave the Continental Army.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Model: Inca Test: Teacher will go over test taking strategies. Will cover any last-minute questions students may have. Teacher will ensure that every student logged into the class is also taking the test as teacher monitors progress through Edulastic.com.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS: Who Should Win: Teacher and students will go over the answer to the sections. Students were supposed to complete this section from last class session. Students were given real reasons and they had to classify them a strength or a weakness for either the Continental or British Army.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Progress Monitoring: Inca Test: Teacher will progress monitor
Independent Practice (25 min.)
8th Grade-SDAIE: Video Clip/Chunking/QuickWrite: Crossing the Delaware: Students will read a short passage that they will have to analyze to figure out the issues being confronted by George Washington one year into the Revolutionary War. Students will then watch a clip that will explain Washington Plans on Crossing the Delaware and the reasoning behind it. Students will explain this in a Quick Write (3-5 sentences).
8th Grade-SDAIE: Word Bank/Freeze Frame: Washington Crossing the Delaware: Students will be given the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze. The picture will have three comic bubbles in which students will had thoughts or dialogue to them about what is happening. Students will have to use all 7 terms in the word bank within the comic bubbles and the explanation caption below.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Metacognition/Edulastic: Inca Test: Students will take the Inca Test on Edulastic. Test will measure their comprehension of the origins, social, political, geography, and achievements of the Inca Empire. If students finish early they can complete their homework on Edpuzzle and then work on missing assignments.
