Correlation to State Content Standards
7.1.3. Describe the establishment by Constantine of the new capital in Constantinople and the development of the Byzantine Empire, with an emphasis on the consequences of the development of two distinct European civilizations, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Cahtolic, and their two distinct views on the church-state relations.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Today I am learning about the Eastern Roman Empire by:
1. Identifying the purpose of Constantinople.
2. Understanding Constantines plan for the Eastern Roman Empire.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (5 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will work on their starter Quiz based on last weeks "This day in History" starters.
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Close Read/Annotate: Byzantine Empire: Teacher will lead students in close read from Judith Herran's book "Women in the Purple" where she provides examples to her theory about the Fall of the Roman Empire. Student will annotate evidence to her theory.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/VBQ: Building Constantinople: Teacher will go over the answers to the video based questions identifying how and why Constantine built Constantinople.
Independent Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: VBQ/Sentence Stems: Building Constantinople: Students will watch a video and explain the reasons for why Constantinople was built by Constantine and what purpose did it hold.
Homework.
EdPuzzle: due by Friday at 5 p.m.

SDAIE: Direct Teach: Schism in Christianity: Teacher will lecture about the growth of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the schism that occurred between the west and east. Main issue that will be highlighted would be the role of the orthodox church, its leaders, and the impact of iconoclasm.
Guided Practice (5 min.)
SDAIE: TPS/EQ: Helena Mother of Constantine: Teacher and students will go over the answers to the EQ based on the chunked reading from the passage by Judith Herrin, Women in Purple.
Independent Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: Venn Diagram/Graphic Organizer: Roman Catholic v. Orthodox: Students will analyze a venn diagram and use the information to complete a table in their graphic organizer that students will have to categorize which church does it.
Homework.
