Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.5: Describe the importance of written and oral traditions in the transmission of African history and culture.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Identify and Explain evidence of societies in West Africa.
2. Analyze the Catalan Atlas map and decipher the social, economic, and political cues of the society.

Anticipatory Set (3 min.)
Daily Journals: Students will read and will describe the main topic from the chunk passage from "This Day in History."
Direct Instruction (10 min.)
SDAIE: Direct Teach/Cornell Notes/Text Related Questions: Early Communities and Villages/Development of Towns: Teacher will clarify the information on how communities were built in West Africa and how they developed into towns. Teacher will explain how they were developed and the importance of metalworking and how it improved agriculture in the towns.
Guided Practice (10 min.)
SDAIE: TPS: Annotations/Map Activity: Teacher will go over the answers to the annotations and Map labeling skills. Teacher will discuss and elaborate further on answers.
Independent Practice (15 min.)
SDAIE: Visual/Map Skills: Catalan Atlas Map : Students will analyze the Catalan Atlas (1325) and identify at least 7 characteristics of a society. They will provide an explanation on how that item benefits a society.
