Correlation to State Content Standards
7.4: Students analyze the geographic, political, and economic, religious, and social structures of the sub-Saharan civilizations of Ghana and Mali in Medieval Africa.
7.4.1: Study the Niger River and the relationship of vegetation zones of forest, savannah, and desert to trade in gold, salt, food, and slaves; and the growth of the Ghana and Mali empires.
7.4.3: Describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of the Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law.
8.2.6: Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.
Expected Student Outcomes (Objective)
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the rise of Ghana’s government. (7th Grade)
2. Describe how trade brought religious and cultural changes to West Africa. (7th Grade)
3. Identify and Explain Washington’s role in defining the Executive Branch. (8th Grade).
4. Describe the Washington’s cabinet and the hardships they encountered during his first term in office.
Common Core Literacy Standard
RH 2: Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.
RH 4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
WHST 4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose and audience.
WHST 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis reflection, and research.
Anticipatory Set (10 min.) Daily Journals: Students will read two excerpts from "This Day in History" and identify the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Direct Instruction (20 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Close Read: The King and His Government: Teacher will lead students in a reading and clarification of Ghana’s Empire.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Lecture/Class Discussion: Washington’s First Term: Teacher will clarify and provide further examples and clarification of Washington’s first term of office. Examples will be his cabinet member, role of Chief Executive, issue on slavery, and Whiskey Rebellion.
Guided Practice (15 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Focus Notes: Government and Trade source: Teacher will go over the answers to the focus notes dealing with Ghana’s Government and the trans-Sahara Trade route.
8th Grade-SDAIE: TPS/Close Paragraph: Teacher will go over the answers to the student’s graphic organizer. Students will be given time to make corrections to their assignment and ask for any further clarification.
Independent Practice (30 min.)
7th Grade-SDAIE: Focus Notes/Essential Question: Ghana’s Government: Students will complete Focus Notes describing the rise of Ghana’s Government and answer the essential question. Students will use the information gathered from the reading of the text.
7th Grade-SDAIE: Visual/Graphic Organizer/Chunk: Ghana’s Trade: Students read small section dealing with the impact of the trans-Saharan trade route. They will use their graphic organizer to be able to identify items being traded and the impact it played in the development of Ghana and West Africa.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Metacogntion: Bill of Rights: Students will take a Bill of Rights Quiz. They will be given 4 scenarios and be able to identify if there is a violation and what amendment it deals with.
8th Grade-SDAIE: Close Paragraph/Chunk/Video Clip: Washington’s First Term: Students will work on the three Close paragraphs that explain the challenges Washington encountered during his first term of President. Students would watch short video clips that present the information and students will complete a close paragraph that summarizes the following issues: cabinet member, role of Chief Executive, issue on slavery, and Whiskey Rebellion.
