Syria Talks about Herself
Syria Talks about Herself
When Poetry Travels to the Dawn of History
Is there a traveler to my homeland who can deliver in trust?
A salute, words, tears, and blame
The salute is to a country, which makes me proud
But the whole world sees her as a mother in blood
The words to her are like a running spring of love
Shahrazad’s words (of the Arabian Nights) may dry up, but not mine
The tears of yearnings are generous and endless
Just like those of a mother over her deserting sons
Sons who left behind their homes to silence
After the homes were pulsing with life and youth
The blame is huge, just as my love to her
If I want to write about blame, I have to assign it to writers
But what makes it easer is the native girl I married
Her eyes attacked me without warning, and there is no cure for the eye attack
Eyes have arrows that no one knows but lovers
Regular arrows may miss, but eye arrows never
A young girl who has the fragrance of Ful and Narcissus
And the home grown apple and grape
She has all that other girls dream to have
Pride bends to her, and beauty is dissolved in her
She stole her name from the Queen of the desert
And she stole her attractiveness from the magic of the Orient
Then she invaded my heart, who invaded a lot before her
So she captured and threw it behind the bars of her eyelashes
Oh Syria, my family and yours are always placed in the heart
And your beauty stamped its shadow on the cornea with love
Oh Syria, talk to me about yourself and about History
Who did build towers and domes to the other?
***
Before History came to my life
I carried him for almost nine months
I gave him half of my name: Jasmine and Spears
And a Moor who, as a falcon, connected the east of earth with its west
Then I nursed him with lioness milk under my tent
Whoever accompanies lions, will not be afraid of wolves
When he paid attention to life and discovered his nudity
I took him to Damascus and purchased him clothes
I put on him clothes of glory and said to him
“If wearing glory doesn’t make someone proud, then no cloth is good for him”
He traveled a lot to other countries
But he always came back to me driven by melting passion
By Kassion, he always found shade, and from Barada he drank
And from the fruits of Al Ghoota (fertile farmland), he ate the best of foods
Mount Kassion, who witnessed the spread of mankind,
Is the Mount of Prophets who honors the earth and cloud
And Barada, who runs into Jullaq (Damascus),
Is a river who is no stranger to legends
Al Ghoota was Gods blessing
I prayed to him for a paradise and he responded with it
Yes, I am Syria and History is my blood son
His hairs turned gray but not mine
If he asks after today about his origins
That is the story, and that is the answer

The Sun gave me part of her name and nature
And the light of the Sun will, no doubt, always shine
The light of the Sun can not be hidden by fingers
Everyone, who tried to hide my light, failed
A lot of nations came as visitors, but others as invaders
The first left treasures, and the other left sorrows
Nations came carrying their civilizations with them
They left behind astonishing monuments
Aram inherited Akkad and Ashour (Assyrians) gave it to Babylon (old civilizations)
The Greek took over from the Persian, and Rome gave it to the Arabs
Even the Pharaohs passed here
So they completed the visitors list
I was the protecting fence for the Phoenicians
And was the base of the trade that they mastered
I crowned Arwad (island) a kingdom who built my fleets
Fleets that brought me closer to the world
An island that has ever been a playground for legends
Like the girl who lost her fisherman lover to the mermaids
But the King of the Sea returned him safe to her
And gave them Arwad from his necklass to be their home
And Europ (a Syrian girl), before Europ (the Continent), was one of my princesses
I named their land after her so she became a mystic legend
I taught the world how to write on the desks of Ebla (kingdom)
And by the Shamra (historic site) Alphabet, I took him to the future
Mary was a Kingdom like no other
Her cities were like no others, and so her perfumes
Afamia (historic city) had great roads and columns
The whole world bent down to her in admiration
In Amreet (historic city), I built monuments and also a temple for strength
And centuries before the Greeks, I invented the Olympic Games
Underneath every foot of my soil, there is a treasure that cries
“Save me, and you will be blessed by my civilizations”
Treasures that are priceless and no money can value
Crowns of glory that stunned the world and left him speechless
Palmira is a ‘Deserts Bride’ like no other place on earth
With incredible treasures of both glory and civilizations
The Romans gifted me there with a temple, coliseum, and victory arch
They, with the Fakhr Al Deen citadel, gave me reasons to be proud
I raised tens of citadels as monuments every where
Aleppo protects Damascus, Al Husen guards Jaaber and Mirkaba
My citadels and I were sculptured from the same rocks
Whoever thinks I vanished, my citadels prove him wrong
Whoever thinks my return to glory is difficult
Difficult is my love, and easy I leave for others

I am Syria, the whole world bowed down respecting my children
Their names circled the horizons like flocks of birds
I promoted five of them to the throne of Rome
For half of a century, Rome had to listen to the music of Rababa (Syrian music instrument)
I sent Rome an Emporess from my city of Memass (Homs city)
Her favors to history are unforgettable.
She, and her sons, claimed the throne,
Then they asked the world “We know no body but us, the glory masters”
And from Shahba (historic city), I sent the last Syrian Caesar
An Arab whose glories were never forgotten like others
The Law of Rome was dictated by me
There was nothing wrong with my river flooding her (Rome and her Tiber River)
From Al-Faihaa (Damascus city), came an architect who built (for Rome) wonders
That uncovered the face of the impossible

The water wheels of Al-Asi (Syrian river) are wonders of all times
God bless the city of Abu Al Fidaa (Hama city) and her lovely people
When History loved Nature, Ariha (historc city) was their daughter
She took from both a great deal
Busra (historic city) is a jewel of the earth
If History would choose a deputy, Busra is whom he assigns
It is where the camel of the Prophet (Mohamad) rested
And where the monk (Buhaira) pronounced his prophecy
It is where Al-Farouq (Omar, the 2nd. Caliph) built me the first mosque
And where I inherited a (Roman) coliseum that became a gate to history
On the walls of Al-Sham (Damascus), I let (Saint) Paul go safely
And near Aleppo, I put the Torah in writing
From the white minaret (of Damascus Mosque), I will greet Jesus when he returns
And from my Ghoota, I will send the liberating armies
In Saidnaya (historic city), the Virgin (Mary) appeared to me and to Caesar
And Samaan (a Syrian Christian monk) did miracles from the top of his column
In the City of Rocks (Malula city), I and Taklla healed the ill
So everyone who returned to God joined our convoy
(Abbassi Caliph) Al-Rasheed found smooth life in my Raqqa (city)
And (Moor Caliph) Hisham enjoyed tasty life in my Rasafa (city)
The Moors built their mosque in Damascus
And built him a twin in Aleppo
And put a third one in Jerusalem
Minarets that the world prostrated to and asked forgiveness
Civilizations passed but left strings in my lyric
History danced Al-Attaba (Syrian song) at its music

The Euphrates (Syrian river) is almost a river from heaven
If there is no gold beneath it (as some believe)), it is for sure a gold maker
Freshness and fertility are some of its names
If legends become orphans, they find family on its banks
Its fountains got used to the company of summits
And its valley got used to the change of nations
The mother of all civilizations flourished on its banks
The horsemen of the Samarians carried her riding its back
Tabaria (Sea of Galilee) is a lake that was mentioned in the Holy Books
The hot fountains beside it offer water that heals

As a meteor, I launched him to (the battle of) Hitteen and Al-Aqsa (mosque)
Before him, I paid tribute to Al-Shaheed, and after him I welcomed Al-Zaher
Kings who changed the face of History, History revered them
From Al-Shahbaa (Aleppo), Sayf Al-Dawla raised my flag high
A brave Prince whose sword lived to jump on enemies
From there too (Aleppo), I sent Sulayaman (hero) to Egyept
He read the General (Kleeber) the verdict of History and carried out the execution
From ‘Latakia of Arabs’ (city), I ordered Jammal (hero) to follow him
He stabbed the enemys fleet with his boat as a fang
From Jabbla (city) to the hills of Jerusalem, I deployed Al-Qassam (hero)
He started a blazing revolution and made the invaders its wood
He said “We will chip the barbaric foot that desecrated our land
And leave it as a lesson for our future generations if they seek freedom”
Youssef (hero) marched into Maysaloun and deliverd my letter to the invaders
He told them “We die like heroes, but you die like dogs”
Under the wings of night and on backs of horses
Hanano (hero), from Al-Zawiya (mountain), walked them on a carpet of blades
Salleh (hero), from the coast (Syrian coast), kept them running
He recited to them from my alphabet, bullets that kept them awake
And Hassan (hero), from Al-Ghoota, shelled their bunkers
He connected their nights with their days and rubbed their noses with dirt
And Sultan (hero) in the ‘Proud Mountain’ cleansed his house with flames
And said “To hell with a house that does not preserve the name of its owner”
“A tent under the shadow of a rifle is more honorable than
Palaces where full cups of humiliation are offered everyday for drink”
Yes I am Syria, and if History asks about the secret of my Glory
I say to him “The people I named know the answer”
Heroes who won’t be late if you cry for help
They will make their chests hard shields to protect you
My rifles never take a break on their arms
But, if they do, it will be for the arms to harvest the necks of the enemy
If they attack, they attack like eagles
And if they defend, they defend like angry lions
If they farm the land, they plant it with dignity
And if they water it, they water it with pride and blood

The nations that came and brought their civilizations with them
I acknowledged their favors as they left me treasures that still fill my land
But those who came with hate racing ahead of them
I separated their heads and made rabab from their skin
Then left their remains for the wind to blow
And for the scavengers, as a feast, covering the hills
Some thought I was defeated
But time circled and I came back triumphant
And some forgot that I am the mother of all civilizations
So they invaded me under the name of civilization and called themselves a mandate
But all ended in the memory of History
History made them an example for others as they lamented their folly
Nations as windstorms blew on me from every direction
The East stormed the West away, and I erased the strangers
