Wattle Farm Fat Boy and Classic Regatta
Wattle Farm Friday Classic Regatta
On Friday myself and Ken's alarm clocks sounded very early....
Ken picked me up in his truck just before 6am, and we hit the road heading for Auckland's Wattle Farm in the rain...
Fog/Rain over the Kaimai's and then into the dark with a nice starry morning in the Waikato.
The sun rose and we were expecting to hit Friday 8am work day traffic with workers heading into towns.
The trip went smoothly and as we did not hit any traffic on the motorway?
Just after 8am we arrived at Wattle Downs and after a couple of trips around the block due to my bad navigating. We found wattle farm lake.
I played around with Slayers DM2 B and C rigs, getting ready for the forecast Blow...(which never came)
Sailors started arriving and the place became alive.
A quick briefing and we were off on foot down the lake to the starting area.
There was no wind...
But it was hinting.
Start time came and the wind arrived as if booked.
A very nice wind straight down the lake which meant the starting line was in the middle of the course and right next to the launching jetty.
Perfect.
My first few starts were a little rough as a few port starters crashed out with starboard boats and found themselves doing several turns.
As the day progressed everyone ran in on Starboard and things started to work well on the start line..
Then lunch...
The afternoon session the wind was very shifty but mid A rig which made for fantastic racing.
The Classic boats by name are no way slow and the racing was extremely tight with only metres from 1st to last.
A goods days sailing, great company and plenty of sailing banter, thanks heaps everyone
3.30pm and we hit the road for Katikati to see David.
Again the trip home was mostly fine trip.
We had a sun tan from ours days sailing,
While we heard reports it rained all day in Tauranga
We picked up some newly measured sails from David in Kati
and then had a 40 minute Dark, Raining trip home to Tauranga through all the roadworks which was not fun...
A great day, thank you to the organisers, officials and sailors.
We want to promote Classic yachts so any ideas on what you would like going forward just let us know.
