IOM Nationals – Day 3 Report (Final Day)
The final day of the IOM Nationals began with a quiet walk along the river at first light, accompanied by light drizzle—an atmospheric start to wrap up the event.
9:00 AM – Skippers’ Briefing
Conditions were light but promising, with the weather forecast suggesting a morning breeze that would fade throughout the day.
9:30 AM – A Rig Race
We kicked off with a light A Rig race, just powered up. I managed a 6th place finish in what can only be described as confused and unpredictable conditions—plenty of smiles all around!
Mid-Morning – C Rig Race
The wind collapsed on the final lap, but the fleet pushed through and completed the race.
Late Morning – B Rig Attempt
The B Rig was launched, but the breeze disappeared entirely. Racing was called off and the fleet returned to shore to wait.
11:00 AM – Departure
With the lake turning to glass and no wind in sight, I made the call to head home, leaving John and Dennis to hold the fort. A 500km Sunday drive back to Tauranga saw me arriving after dark.
Weather Recap
The forecast had predicted a brief morning breeze followed by a dying offshore wind—and that’s exactly what unfolded. Video footage from the afternoon confirmed the forecast was spot on.
