Antony setting up his Class 5 Land Yacht in Muriwai Auckland

Once upon a time when I was a wee lad I sailed an ice yacht. Another kiwi and I were working in Greenland and we made this ice yacht out of some 4 x 2’s,

sharpened steel for runners and a sail that for reasons unknown was in the store shed.

Had some amazing fast runs, the fastest was when we got the company helicopter, a jet ranger, to hover along behind us and blow us along.

Came to an abrupt end with an accidental jibe and we skidded along the ice for hundreds of meters.

The helicopter had to landed on the ice and when we got to it, the pilot was rolling around the ice laughing.

“Funniest thing I ever see,” he said,

“yacht go one way kiwi’s go other way.

I was laughing so much I had to land, i was no longer able to fly.”

Back in 1998 I took this baby to South America - Land Yacht Worlds but broke my axle on the 1st day ....

1997 I took her to Western Aussie PACRIM

and raced her with a solid carbon fibre wing sails on there Salt Lake.

She would do a lap of 90mile beach in about 3 hours.

(approx 120km for one lap, with a little more distance added on for the tacking sections)

Her top recorded speed was just over 140kph on this mast only

in a 40 knot cross shore storm here in NZ...

and now you know where i got my old nz777 email handle from :)
